Corrections Report

I attended the 5th Annual National Corrections Conference held in Chicago.   It was attended by people who are involved in Corrections services in jails and prisons throughout the United States and Canada.  I was asked to read  How It Works at one of the meetings.  The workshop consisted of several speakers from around the country  who had been incarcerated, got sober in the various prisons and became very involved in carrying meetings and services into the facilities and now serve at the national, state, and local levels of service throughout the US and Canada. There were speakers who discussed the various levels of service at the group, district and Area levels... correspondence, pre-release correspondence inside and outside of prisons and jails.  The importance of continuing to call facilities even when they say they are not interested...to never give up and to continue to be on good terms with the people who run the institutions.  It is also important to stay updated on the digital importance of inmates who are able to correspond with certain people in the community by using tablets available in certain prisons.

15 AA members from Area 51 were in attendance.  One of the main speakers was from D70.  At the end of the event there was a business meeting at which time different states were given the opportunity to present their state's bid to hold the 2024 National Correction Event.  Our group, all 14 of us led by Angel S. (Area 51 former Area 51 Corrections Chair) wore Carolina Blue Shirts, presented ourselves on stage to the committee using power points and loud enthusiasm for AA and Corrections Service    Our bid was unanimously accepted  by approximately 100+ votes.  A small planning meeting was held after the event.  I was assigned to be a liaison for the Western Region of Area 51.  In November 2024 the National Corrections Conference will be held in Charlotte NC.

As of this report, we have 13 volunteers HCDPS.   We are thrilled to announce that Spanish speaking members from Grupo Gratitud will be volunteering very soon.  Approximately 16 volunteer TCDPS.  Rutherford County Jail and Polk County Jail closed to volunteers.  HCDPS temporarily closed until 12/14 for reasons unknown. There are some community outreach programs in the various counties which we will contact to see where AA might fit in.  We are also planning to set up a pre-release program similar to Bridging the Gap. More information to follow.  I was unable to attend the Forrest City Eating Meeting due to the holiday.

Respectfully Submitted,

Terry G.
